About Kohunlich Ruins Premier Tour

Kohunlich, a fascinating Mayan archaeological site, has a rich history dating back to the Pre-Classic period (200 BC). However, its most significant development occurred during the Early Classic period (250-600 AD).

Kohunlich thrived as a regional trade hub connecting the Yucatan Peninsula with the Peten region of Guatemala. It served as a vital stopover point for merchants and travelers, fostering cultural exchange and economic prosperity. However, the city's decline began in the Late Classic period, eventually leading to its abandonment around 1100 AD.

This tour departs from The Native Choice Kiosk, conveniently located just steps from the port entrance. For a stress-free start, we include detailed meeting point information on all tour confirmations.

The journey from Costa Maya to Kohunlich takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. Please note that recent road construction may cause some minor discomfort during a short stretch of the journey. Additionally, the final 9 kilometers of the road can be narrow and potentially bumpy during the rainy season.

Be prepared for a moderate amount of walking, as the site covers a significant area. While the paths are well-maintained, exploring the various structures and hidden gems may involve some distance. Comfortable footwear is recommended.

This tour is suitable for adventurers of all ages. While children are welcome, please note that the tour involves moderate walking and climbing. Parents are encouraged to assess their child's ability to participate in such activities.
At the site, guests of all ages can enjoy exploring the ancient ruins, including the opportunity to spot (or hear) howler monkeys.

Many of the site's structures offer opportunities for climbing, allowing you to experience the ancient Maya world from a unique perspective.

Currently, Kohunlich offers limited amenities beyond clean and functional restrooms.

This is a comprehensive tour that includes refreshments for your convenience. If time allows, we may also make a brief stop in Bacalar at Holly Margarita Lake Shore Club, allowing you to freshen up, use restroom facilities, and enjoy a quick snack.

Tripods and drones aren't allowed into the site.
